It can also differentiate speakers that have not been heard before from those it has previously analyzed. For example, a fully developed system could be used to screen incoming telephone calls and to alert staff when a known speaker was on the line. It would ignore all others even though some of the others had never called before. Use during telephone banking and other transactions where it is important to identify the caller are also foreseen. When fully developed, for example, the system can be implemented on a laptop computer where up to 50 telephone lines could be monitored for a different known speaker. Or, the system will be able to monitor a single line listening for up to 50 known speakers and rejecting all others. It will be possible to implement the system on a single low-cost mass produced chip suitable for both civilian and military applications. NSC eventually plans on studying use of the chip in a telephone answering machine.
